Sesame Street Offers Free Divorce Resource for Parents

Glendale child custody attorney

It can be difficult to know how to talk to your child about divorce and it may seem that as common as divorce is, there aren’t a lot of materials about it designed for young children. Fortunately, Sesame Street has utilized its award-winning staff to create an online resource that will help both parents and children through the divorce process. Little Children, Big Challenges: Divorce kit is a free online kit you can download to help you talk to your preschooler and help your preschooler adjust to the divorce. Designed to support both parents and children, the kit contains:

  •  A storybook
  • Printable activities for preschoolers
  • A tip sheet to help your extended family learn how to talk to your child and help you
  • A tip sheet for parents who are going through divorce
  • Playlists of children’s songs and videos
  • A Spanish language information sheet

Your child will interact with familiar faces such as Grover, Elmo, and Abby while doing the activities in the kit. The kit is designed to be age-appropriate, supportive, and informative. Sesame Street has spent many years studying divorce and its effect on children, trying to find a way to provide information and support. Several years ago they developed a TV episode that ultimately never ran because it created negative emotions in the children who tested it. Since then, they have invested many hours of research and testing to create material that is positive and appropriate, which parents can feel comfortable with and confident in.
